Wrestling at the 2016 Summer Olympics

The Wrestling events of the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics will be held at the Hall 3 of the Olympic Training Center in Barra da Tijuca from 14 to 21 August 2016.

Wrestling at the 2016 Summer Olympics

In Freestyle Wrestling Event, two wrestlers grapple each other in a defined area, each attempting to manoeuvre their opponent into point-scoring holds and throws or a match-winning fall.

In Greco-Roman Wrestling Event, two wrestlers wrestle each other with the aim of forcing the opponent’s shoulders on to the mat, known as a ‘pin’, or scoring the most technical points to win at the end of the timed bout.

The Freestyle Wrestling Event made its Olympic debut at the 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis while Greco-Roman Wrestling Event made its Olympic debut at the 1896 Summer Olympics in Athens.

There will be 18 medal event taking place. Both men and women will compete in 9 events each. There will be 12 Freestyle Wrestling Events and 6 Greco-Roman Wrestling Events.

Around 344 athletes (172 men and 172 women) are expected to compete in these 18 different wrestling events of Rio 2016 Summer Olympics.

The final qualifications for this Olympic event will get over on 8th May 2016 after the end of 2nd World Qualification Tournament.
