South Africa’s Wayde van Niekerk won the gold medal in the Men’s 400m event of Rio 2016 Olympic Games on Sunday.
The 24-year-old South African finished the race in 43.03 seconds to break the 17 year old world record of 43.18 seconds set by Michael Johnson in Seville in 1999.
Grenada’s Kirani James, who had won the gold medal in London Olympics in 2012 managed to win the silver medal finishing second with a time of 43.76 seconds to achieve his seasons best timing.
LaShawn Merritt of United States finished third with a time of 43.83 seconds to win the bronze medal. This was also his seasons best timing.
