Rugby Sevens at the 2016 Summer Olympics

The Rugby Sevens event of the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics will be held at the Deodoro Stadium in Deodoro Olympic Park from 6 to 11 August 2016.

In a seven-a-side version of rugby union, two teams attempt to score tries or win penalties, moving an oval-shaped ball from player to player by hand, always passing it backwards.

This is the first time that the Rugby Sevens tournament will be ever played in Olympics. Previously 15-a-side version of the game (Rugby Union) made its Olympic debut in 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris and was last played at the 1924 Summer Olympics.

Rio 2016 Summer Olympics Rugby Sevens Events :

There will be two medal event namely – Men’s and Women’s Team Event.

Men’s Team Event : 12 teams will compete for 1 medal event.

Women’s Team Event : 12 teams will compete for 1 medal event.

Men’s Teams Qualified So Far: Brazil, Fiji, Great Britain, New Zealand, South Africa, Argentina, United States, France, Japan, Australia and Kenya.

Last qualified team will be decided after the 2016 Final Olympic Qualification Tournament which ends of 19 June 2016.

Women’s Teams Qualified So Far : Brazil, Australia, Canada, Great Britain, New Zealand, Colombia, United States, France, Kenya, Fiji and Japan.

Last qualified team will be decided after the 2016 Final Olympic Qualification Tournament which ends of 26 June 2016.
