General public from the host nation Brazil, will become the stars of the Rio 2016 Olympic Torch Relay.
According to latest media reports, the organizers of Rio 2016 Olympic Games have launched a campaign to select members of the general public to carry the Olympic torch.
After the flame is officially lit in Olympia, Greece, on April 21, it will travel to Brasilia on May 3, 2016 to start its 95-day Brazil journey, wherein the Olympic torch will pass through more than 300 Brazilian cities, travelling 12,500 miles (20,000 km) by road, 10,000 miles (16,000 km) by air, and carried by around 12,000 people – arriving in Rio for the opening ceremony at the Maracana stadium on August 5.
At least 12,000 people are expected to participate in the Rio 2016 Olympic torch relay.
According to Rio2016.com, organizers are seeking nominations for Brazilian residents who have inspired others by making a difference in their communities.
“Taking part in the Olympic Torch Relay is not exclusively for celebrities and athletes. Everyone can take part, nominate someone or be a torch bearer, it just has to be shown that they have made a difference in the lives of others,” Caetano said.
Coca-Cola, Nissan and Bradesco are the three Olympic Torch Relay partners for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
