Kazakhstan’s weightlifter Nijat Rahimov won the gold medal in Men’s 77 kg Weightlifting event of Rio 2016 Olympics on Wednesday.
Kazakhstan, who lost five Olympic titles from 2008 and 2012 through retrospective doping positives, won their first gold of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games when Nijat Rahimov broke the clean and jerk world record in the men’s 77kg category.
Nijat Rahimov lifted 165 kilos in snatch and 214 kgs in clean and jerk for an overall score of 379 kilos to win the gold and in the process broke world record in clean and jerk lift.
Lü Xiaojun of China lifted 177 kgs in snatch to break his own world record and 202 kgs in clean and jerk for an overall score of 379 kilos as well, but had to settle for the silver medal, as Rahimov won by virtue of his lighter bodyweight.
Mohamed Mahmoud of Egypt won the bronze medal lifting 165 kgs in snatch to break the African record and 196 kgs in clean and jerk for an overall score of 361 kilos.
