China’s Long Qingquan won the gold medal in the Men’s 56 kg Weightlifting event of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games lifting a total of 307 kgs and in the process net a new world record.
The previous world record was 305 kgs set by Halil Mutlu of Turkey during Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
Long Qingquan’s 170kg lift with his last attempt in the clean and jerk saw him grab gold from London 2012 champion Om Yun-Chol of North Korea, who lifted 303 kgs. He had to settle for the Silver medal.
Thailand’s Sinphet Kruaithong won the bronze medal lifting 289 kgs.
The event took place at the Riocentro Pavilion 2.
