Judo at the 2016 Summer Olympics

The Judo events of the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics will take place from 6 to 12 August 2016 at the Carioca Arena 2 inside Barra Olympic Park in Barra da Tijuca in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

There are a total of 14 medal events, with both men and women competing in 7 events each.

In Judo, competitors must try to throw their opponent onto the ground with their back on the floor, immobilise them on the ground for 20 seconds or force a submission.

The sport of Judo made its Olympic debut at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

Men’s Events :

  • Extra-lightweight (60 kg)
  • Half-lightweight (66 kg)
  • Lightweight (73 kg)
  • Half-middleweight (81 kg)
  • Middleweight (90 kg)
  • Half-heavyweight (100 kg)
  • Heavyweight (+100 kg)

Women’s Events :

  • Extra-lightweight (48 kg)
  • Half-lightweight (52 kg)
  • Lightweight (57 kg)
  • Half-middleweight (63 kg)
  • Middleweight (70 kg)
  • Half-heavyweight (78 kg)
  • Heavyweight (+78 kg)

As many as 386 athletes will compete for the 14 medal events. The qualification will be based on the world ranking list which will be prepared on May 30, 2016.
