Kenya’s long distance runner Jemima Sumgong won the gold medal in the Women’s Marathon event of Rio 2016 Olympic Games on Sunday.
Jemima Sumgong became the first Kenyan woman to ever win the Olympic marathon by finishing first with a time of 2:24:04 to win the gold medal.
Eunice Kirwa of Bahrain won the silver medal finishing second with a time of 2:24:13.
Ethiopia’s world champion Mare Dibaba won the bronze medal after finishing third clocking a time of 2:24:30.
Kenya have been winning silver medals in this event for the last three Olympics in a row.
Kenya-born Eunice Kirwa, secured Bahrain’s first ever Olympic silver and second medal of all time.
