Helen Maroulis of United States won the gold medal in the Women’s Freestyle 53 kg Wrestling event of Rio 2016 Olympic Games on Thursday.
Helen Maroulis won the first wrestling Gold for USA in this year’s Olympic Games defeating three-time defending Olympic champion Saori Yoshida of Japan by a score of 4-1.
“I’ve been dreaming about wrestling Saori for so long,” Maroulis said. “She’s a hero. She’s the most decorated wrestler in the sport. It’s such an honor to wrestle her.”
Saori Yoshida had to settle for the silver medal this time around after loosing the gold medal match, after winning gold medals in 2004, 2008 and 2012 in the 55 kg category.
The bronze medals of the event were won by Azerbaijan’s Nataliya Synyshyn and Sweden’s Sofia Mattsson who defeated Venezuela’s Betzabeth Argüello and China’s Zhong Xuechun in their respective bronze medal matches.
