The Gymnastics events of the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics will take place in three disciplines from 6 to 21 August 2016 at the Arena Olímpica do Rio located in the region of Barra da Tijuca, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
There are a total of 18 medal events (Artistic – 14, Rhythmic – 2, Trampoline – 2).
In Artistic Gymnastics, combining strength, balance, flexibility and grace, gymnasts push themselves to their physical limits using a variety of apparatus, such as vaults, bars and beams, as well as in the spectacular apparatus-free ‘floor’ routines.
In, Rhythmic Gymnastics, competitors perform finely choreographed routines incorporating hand-held apparatus in a bid to wow the judges, using the full area of the mat and breath-taking manoeuvres to try and achieve the best score.
In, Trampoline Gymnastics, athletes perform acrobatic movements such as twists and somersaults in mid-air, bouncing on a trampoline and are awarded points for difficulty, execution and flight time.
The Artistic Gymnastics Event made its Olympic debut at the 1896 Summer Olympics in Athens, the Rhythmic Gymnastics Event made its Olympic debut at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles while the Trampoline Gymnastics made its Olympic debut at the 2000 Summer Olympics at Sydney.
