Great Britain won the gold medal in the Women’s Hockey tournament of Rio 2016 Olympic Games on Friday, August 19.
Great Britain claimed the Women’s Hockey Gold Medal after defeating the Netherlands 2-0 in a historic shootout win, after both the teams had tied on three goals each.
The Netherlands were hot favourites to win the gold medal, having won the titles in Beijing 2008 and London 2012, and having a winning streak since their last loss which was in the finals of Athens Olympics in 2004 against Germany.
It was a great effort by the Great Britain’s Women’s Hockey team, who had won the bronze medal in London 2012. It is their first Women’s Hockey Olympic title.
Germany won the bronze medal in the event defeating New Zealand 2 – 1 in their bronze medal match.
