There are a total of 6 medal events (Dressage – 2, Jumping – 2, Eventing – 2).

In the Dressage Event, without making any sound, the rider must prompt the horse to perform compulsory movements – such as steps, trots and canters – and freestyle routines choreographed to music, all of which are assessed by judges

In the Jumping Event, riders must complete a show jumping course of 8 to 12 obstacles in the fastest possible time without any faults.

In the Eventing Event, riders must compete in three types of horsemanship – dressage, cross country and jumping – and avoid accumulating penalty points for errors.

The Jumping Equestrian Event made its Olympic debut at the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris while the Jumping and Eventing Equestrian Event made their Olympic debut at the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm.
