Elis Ligtlee took an early lead and never surrendered it to some of the world’s fastest riders to win the gold medal. It is Netherlands has four cycling medals so far at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Two time Olympic Gold Medallist, Australia’s Anna Meares finished third to win the bronze medal.

“It’s unbelievable. The semi-final didn’t go as I had hoped, but in the keirin, anything can happen,” Ligtlee told reporters.

“It was go, go, go, go, to the finish line, no thinking.”
