Russia’s Irina Vesnina and Ekaterina Makarova have won the gold medal in the Women’s Doubles Tennis event of Rio 2016 Olympic Games on Sunday.
Russian pair defeated Martina Hingis and Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland in the final match in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
The captain of the Russian women’s tennis team and former world No.2, Anastasia Myskina, said that the success of Makarova and Vesnina came as no surprise to her.
Martina Hingis and Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland had to settle for a silver medal in the event. This is the first ever Olympic medal won by Martina Hingis.
In an All-Czech Republic bronze medal match, pair of Lucie Safarova and Barbora Strycova beat their compatriots Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka in straight sets 7-5,6-1.
