Derek Drouin of Canada won the gold medal in the Men’s High Jump event of Rio 2016 Olympic Games on Tuesday, August 16.
26-year-old Derek Drouin won the gold medal with a jump of 2.38 metres, a season-best performance. He tried 2.40 meters jump in an attempt to break the Olympic record of 2.39 metres but failed.
Derek Drouin is the first Canadian male to win gold at the Rio Games. He’s also the first Canadian to win gold in the high jump since Duncan McNaughton at the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles.
Qatar’s Mutaz Essa Barshim won the silver medal with the best jump of 2.36 metres. It was Qatar’s first medal of Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
Ukraine’s Bohdan Bondarenko won the bronze medal with a jump of 2.33 metres.
