Canoeing at the 2016 Summer Olympics

The Canoeing events of the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics will take place in two disciplines and will be held in two stages, across two different venues.

The  Slalom canoe events will take place from 7 to 11 August 2016 at the Olympic Whitewater Stadium while the sprint canoe events will take place from 15 to 20 August 2016 at the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas in Copacabana.

There are a total of 16 medal events – Slalom (4 medal events) and Sprint (12 medal events).

In Slalom Canoe event, athletes must complete a 250m white-water course, passing through gates and avoiding obstacles, in the shortest time possible

In the Sprint Canoe event, athletes must complete a straight course in the shortest possible time

The Sprint Canoeing Event made its Olympic debut at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin while the Slalom Canoeing Event made its Olympic debut much later, at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich.

Rio 2016 Summer Olympics Canoeing Events :

Out of the total 16 events, Men will compete in 11 events while women will compete in 5 events.

  • Men’s K-1

Slalom Canoe Women’s Events :

  • Women’s K-1

Sprint Canoe Men’s Events :

  • Men’s C-1 200 m
  • Men’s C-1 1000 m
  • Men’s C-2 1000 m
  • Men’s K-1 200 m
  • Men’s K-1 1000 m
  • Men’s K-2 200 m
  • Men’s K-2 1000 m
  • Men’s K-4 1000 m

Sprint Canoe Women’s Events :

  • Women’s K-1 200 m
  • Women’s K-1 500 m
  • Women’s K-2 500 m
  • Women’s K-4 500 m

The format for the all the events includes Heats, Semifinals and Final.

As of January 2016, 240 athletes have qualified for canoeing events with few more qualifying events yet to happen. These qualifying events are -

Slalom Canoe Qualifying Events :

  • 2016 Oceania Canoeing Championships from 19 to 21 February 2016.
  • 2016 Asian Canoe Slalom Championships on 23 and 24 April 2016.
  • 2016 European Canoe Slalom Championships from 13 to 15 May 2016.

Sprint Canoe Qualifying Events :

  • 2016 Oceania Canoeing Championships from 12 to 14 February  2016.
  • 2016 African Sprint Qualifier from 29 March to 2 April 2016.
  • 2016 European Sprint Qualifier on 18 and 19 May 2016.
  • 2016 Pan American Sprint Qualifier on 19 and 20 May 2016.
