Argentina won the gold medal in the Men’s Field Hockey tournament of Rio 2016 Olympic Games on Thursday at the Olympic Hockey Centre in Deodoro.
In the gold medal match, Argentina defeated Belgium 4 – 2 to win its first ever field hockey Olympic gold medal.
Bellgium had taken a lead 1 – 0 lead in the third minute of the game but then Argentina came back strongly with three goals before the end of the second quarter to lead 3 – 2. In the end they won the match with a 4 – 2 score.
Belgium had to settle for a silver medal.
Germany, considered favorite to win their 5th Olympic Men’s Hockey title had to settle for Bronze this time around after winning the bronze medal match through a penalty shootout score of 4 – 3 after they tied with Netherlands 1 – 1.
Germany had won the Gold Medal in Men’s Hockey in 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Olympics.
