Anna van der Breggen of Netherlands wins Gold in Women’s Individual Road Race

Anna van der Breggen of Netherlands won the gold medal in the Women’s Individual Road Race event of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Van der Breggen won the 141 km race in a time of 3 hours 51 minutes 27 seconds to win the gold medal while Emma Johansson of Sweden finished second to win the silver, and Elisa Longo Borghini of Italy finished third to earn the bronze.

The race was a tale of contrasting fortunes for two Dutch cyclists where Anna van der Breggen won Gold medal while Annemiek van Vleuten crashed after leading the race with just 11 kilometers to go.

Annemiek van Vleuten came of the steep Vista Chinesa, where several men – including Britain’s Geraint Thomas and Italy’s Vincenzo Nibali – crashed on Saturday.
