Recently, India’s lone Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra was selected to be one of the goodwill ambassadors for the Indian contingent for the upcoming Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
This move comes weeks after the Indian Olympics Association made headlines after selecting Bollywood superstar Salman Khan as their Goodwill ambassador for the Indian contingent for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The move that got stark responses came from all quarters.
Reacting to the appointment, Abhinav Bindra, said that he is looking forward to support and motivate all sportsmen representing the country.
“It’s a real honour for me to be the goodwill ambassador of Indian contingent at the Rio Olympics. I am happy to support and motivate all fellow sportspersons who will be representing our country at the Rio Olympics. The welfare of sportspersons and encouraging them to give their best is very precious to me,” Bindra said. “I strongly believe that all the sportspersons from different parts of the country, pursuing their unique skills are the true ambassadors of the growing sporting culture in this country. I have already extended my full support to all Rio qualified athletes by sending letters to each one of them,” he added.
Abhinav Singh Bindra won the Olympic Gold Medal in the 10 m Air Rifle event at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games to become the first and so far the only Indian to win an individual gold medal at the Olympic Games.
More than 90 athletes from India will represent India at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games scheduled to take place from 5 to 21 August 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
